What is the Flu?

Influenza (flu) is a viral infection.  People often use the term “flu” to describe any kind of mild illness, such as a cold or a stomach virus that has symptoms like the flu.  It is a general term that is sometimes misused to describe symptoms.  But the real flu is different.  Flu symptoms are usually worse than a cold and lasts longer.  The flu usually does not cause vomiting or diarrhoea in adults.  Most flu outbreaks happen in late autumn and early winter.

What causes the flu?

The flu is caused by influenza viruses A and B.  There are different strains of the flu virus every year.

Can the flu be prevented?

You can help prevent the flu by getting the flu vaccine every year.  It is best to get the vaccine as soon as it is available.  Currently the vaccine is available as an injection which can be administered to you at your convenience in O'Sullivans pharmacy by appointment.

What are the benefits of the winter flu vaccination service?

The flu vaccine works by helping your immune system produce antibodies to the flu virus.  When someone who has been vaccinated comes into contact with the virus the antibodies attack the virus.
